Monumenta 2012 with DANIEL BUREN

LIZ SAYS: I had heard the Grand Palais described as the building with the biggest glass roof in Europe. I love this building with a passion. I will go see anything there because the architecture itself is such a treat.
Monumenta is a yearly event that celebrates the architecture by having an artist create a site specific work that fills the space. This year, the artist is Daniel Buren. In Paris, he is best known for the black and white posts he erected in the courtyard of the Palais Royale. Playful and simple, his work brings joy. Light, color and space under the biggest glass roof in Europe shifts as the clouds float by, sublimely intensifying the tones, from hard edges to cotton candy soft.
Once through the first break in the forest of color, there is a collection of round mirrors on the floor, reflecting the glass roof, the sky, the clouds and the people that walk across them. Once again, playing with every possible angle and flow in the space.
Climbing the fabulous curlicued  ironwork balustraded marble stairs lead to yet another treat. Like standing on a mountain top, looking at the trees, you get a whole new perspective on the scene. The entire work fills the enormous space with hard candy colors forming blurry images of the people filling the gorgeously modified space. Bravo, Monsieur Buren.
