ArtParis 2011

LIZ SAYS: We went to ArtParis. Its an annual event in the gorgeous Grand Palais that showcases new art.
I have to say, for me, this year was pretty much of a bummer. There was a lot of guns, big guns, giant guns, guns of every color pink, yellow, chartreuse glocks. Lots of disfigurement, people, usually women in pain or with ugly things being done to them. There was some humor. The bored looking woman was sitting with some animated felt cones that wiggled around. They were kind of funny. Actually, her boredom made them much more entertaining.
There was a performance, a man painting another man to match the background.
One piece was cheerfully humorous, it was a large piece that resembled a postcard of a blossoming tree. It was made of buttons.

  1. Thanks for sharing this window on the Paris art world with us!!! I am sad, but not surprised, to hear about all of the images of violence and violation, especially regarding women. There is always a reason that certain images or ideas take hold of the social consciousness (or is is unconsciousness?) So much conflict around us, enemies that we cannot identify, wars and rumors of wars, the assault of the daily and nightly newscasts ~ perhaps the artists were dreaming of a weapon big enough to put an end to challenges from the smaller/weaker/more invisible Other. That alone is pretty damn scary. And women, well, they are reduced to objects to be dominated, used/misused, and then tossed aside with as little thought as might be given an empty Coke can. Very sad. I would like to have seen the wiggly felt cones though!!
