BETES OFF at the Conciergerie, Paris

BETES OFF

LIZSAYS: Over by the Palais de Justice, there is the Conciergerie. It’s a gorgeous collection of rooms with arches and stone. Right now it is filled with an amazing forest full of creatures, some we recognize and others we only partially know.
The name of the exhibition of 45 artists is called Betes Off. I am told it is a a triple entedre, for the building housed poor little Marie Antoinette before her head was offed; Then there is betes (meaning animals or beasts, in english) so, that’s animals, beasts off; and of coUrse bets off, once again en anglais. As you can tell, the French are big on word play.

It was a really enchanting show. One of the best pieces was a video of finches, playing an electric guitar. One of the finches even used a tool to modify his playing, he took a twig and added it to the bridge causing a completely different sound. I know most people will think its just birds messing around, but I know birds and they are intelligent and inquisitive.

Another really lovely piece was of an owl, a it was caught in mid flight with down, flies and what looked to be milkweed seeds all hung in rectangular wiring. You could see the flight pattern of the bird as well as its spectacular beauty in action. My photos cannot do it justice.

A video of a white horse walking in what I could only think was a hydro-therapy tank was mesmerizing in its subtle silence.

I also found a link to the guitar playing finches video.
