Histories de Voir Show and Tell Foundation Cartier

Histories de Voir Show and Tell Foundation Cartier

Liz Says: I had high expectations for this show. It was colorful but the variations were limited. It was ‘naive’ art in the sense that you would not find the big names here. But, it was also, a tad patriarchal, in that, at points, I had the feeling that someone just went to a village with pens and paper and said “draw”.
The show was disproportionally Brazilian and it wasn’t because the best art was Brazilian. There were vivid bead paintings by Jean Baptiste Jean Joseph, lovely imaginative paintings by Hans Scherfig and imaginative dark humor from Tadanori Yokoo. The imagined cityscapes of Mamadou Cisse’ gave great insight to the guy who sits night watching while overtimers go in and out of the buildings that make a cityscape.
But, the overall feeling was one of sadness, for me. Lost cultures, people consumed by the giant present. We live in a world where bigger is represented and smaller is lost. Lots needs to be expressed, even if only by shows like this.
