the Golden Buddha at Versailles in Autumn
LIZ SAYS:We finally got out to Versailles to see the Manga exhibition. Manga, for those who don't know is, at its most simply put, japanese style graphic novel art. So, its kind of funny and pop. As sad as it might sound we just could not stand the maze of the other exhibit, which we had to muddle though to get the the indoor Manga site, so we gave up and went out into the garden. I have never been one for the stuffy indoors of castles and the musty furnishings. They are grand and fascinating but as long as the sun is shining, I cannot wait to get outside. The sun was shining. In our defense, we had been given directions 3 times to the indoor exhibit, but all of them were wrong and it was late afternoon. The sun was beckoning. The leaves were turning and the outside was ablaze with color. It was too much to resist. My camera finger was twitching.
We knew the master piece was outside, so we would just see that. It was called a golden Buddha. It was unlike any Buddha I had ever seen but it was golden.
The garden's flowers were all dug up, so the patterns of the box hedges swirls were offset but the beautifully composted soil.
Evidently, some aristocrat had objected to the Buddha's presence, so Dick was determined to see it. It really made my day. With the beauty that is Versailles, normally, overwhelming, glided, massive, meticulous, here is this golden wildly goofball character, one side with shark-like teeth protruding from its round head, the other side with a wacky cartoon smile. It was great fun.
The calm was great. There were only two busloads of tourists spread amongst the grounds. In the summer there are easily 100.
The sunlight was changing focus every few minutes, highlighting areas in the distance, like dancing with different partners. It was a beautiful afternoon.
The next day and today, it has rained all day but we still feel the colors of the gardens of Versailles.
